Junior Division Timeline

September 2017

  • Attend Student/Teacher meetings with the Metro Richmond STEM Fair Director (if available at your school).
  • Determine your area of research (What would you like to learn more about?).

 

October 2017

  • Search the literature to find out as much as you can about the science that is already known about your area of research.
  • Formulate a project idea.
  • Submit your project idea to your teacher for approval.
  • If your project is restricted (involves people, vertebrates, biologically hazardous agents, or controlled or hazardous substances or devices), submit the appropriate forms to your teacher for approval by your schools Science Review Committee.  You may not begin experimentation until your project has been approved by your teacher. 
  • Write the rationale and literature review.  
  • Obtain and organize a lab notebook or set up a Google Doc that will serve as your lab notebook.  (Google Docs must be printed out to be presented to the judges if they deem it necessary.) 

 

November 2017

  • Fill out ISEF forms; be sure to obtain parent and teacher signatures.
  • Complete the experimental design.
  • Gather materials.

 

December 2017

  • Carry out the experiment and record the data (include both qualitative and quantitative data, as appropriate).
  • Complete the observations analysis of data and discussion of results.

 

January 2018

  • Write conclusion.
  • Cite references.
  • Write abstract for the research project.
  • Meet with your school sponsor to ensure that all MRSF forms are filled out correctly and completely.
  • Participate in a peer review of your research projects; make appropriate revisions.
  • Submit forms and research paper online and deliver a copy of the forms and research paper to the MathScience Innovation Center by 5:00 PM on January 26, 2018.

 

March 2018

  • First place and selected 2nd place senior division category winners advance to the Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair on April 13 and 14, 2018

 

May 2018

  • Top senior division MRSF winners advance to Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania May 13-18, 2018.
