OUR MISSION

The MathScience Innovation Center provides extraordinary educational experiences in science, technology, and mathematics to K-12 educators and students, creating enthusiasm, inspiring innovation and developing skills needed for STEM studies and careers.

STUDENT PROGRAMS

Our classes are designed to meet high academic and industry expectations, as well as Standards of Learning and Next Generation Science Standards. The use of inquiry-based approaches allows students to actively employ science and math methods to solve real-world questions rather than learning formulas or procedures in the absence of context. For example, students learn about Newton’s Laws of Motion and experience these laws as they design, test and re-design their own Maglev train and propel it down a magnetic track. Inquiry-based approaches like these help students develop the necessary skills for success in a rapidly changing world.

CLASSROOM LESSONS

The MathScience Innovation Center has more than 100 math and science lessons that are taught in K-12 classrooms in Central Virginia and beyond. Our lessons are explicitly “inquiry-based” using the 5E Model of Instruction to maximize student discourse and engagement. Lessons range from 60 – 90 minutes and are designed to meet current and future educational and career demands.

VIRTUAL LESSONS

Virtual lessons are live MSiC lessons broadcasted over the Internet. Individual teachers or entire classrooms may participate! Individuals just need a computer with Internet access, a microphone, and a webcam. Classrooms will need a computer with Internet access, a projector, and a microphone and speakers.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Center hosts many interactive workshops, seminars, and classes for educators and school personnel during the school year and summer. MSiC educators research, develop and implement cutting-edge curricula with professionals from across the nation including NASA, National Geographic, and university and community-based experts to provide rigorous and engaging programs for educators.

MRSF STEM 2021 Gala

The MathScience Innovation Center Board has voted to cancel the 2022 Metro Richmond STEM Fair (MRSF).  Although we deeply regret that many students will miss the opportunity to showcase their research and hard work at this fair, we look forward to an exciting display of innovative projects in 2023!
